Alliance Health to Open in Cape Girardeau

Several local physicians are combining their practices in a new multi-specialty medical practice set to open next month in Cape Girardeau.  Alliance Health is scheduling appointments now for its primary care, internal medicine, pediatric and dermatology physicians. The practice at 304 S. Mount Auburn Road. The building is owned by Greg Tobin of Missouri Plastic & Hand Surgery, which is in a separate space of the building complex. Tom Kelsey, broker with Lorimont Commercial Real Estate, handled the lease arrangements.

"It's a great location, right across the street from Doctors’ Park,” said Jennifer Icaza-Gast, who owns the new practice along with her husband, internal medicine physician Josh Gast.  In addition to Gast, other physicians at Alliance Health will include primary care physician Ramiro Icaza, dermatologist Lawrence Feigenbaum and pediatrician James Hoffman, who will practice part time.  Gast, Hoffman and Icaza have all had established practices in the Cape Girardeau and Jackson areas. However, Feigenbaum is new to the area

Fiegenbaum will provide a full range of dermatology services for adult and pediatric patients ranging from cosmetic procedures to skin cancer surgery and hair transplants.  Originally from St. Louis, Feigenbaum graduated Summa Cum Laude from the University of Missouri and earned his medical degree from the University of Missouri’s School of Medicine before completing his residency at Parkland Hospital/University of Texas-Southwestern, in Dallas. He holds memberships in the American Academy of Dermatology, the American Society of Dermatologic Surgeons, the Missouri Dermatologic Society and the St. Louis Dermatologic Society.  Icaza-Gast said patients of recently-retired Cape Girardeau dermatologist Hal Brown have been scheduling appointments to see the new dermatologist. "His first three weeks are booked and we haven't even marketed the practice yet, she said".

Alliance Health will accept most major health insurances and is establishing referral relationships with physicians in other specialties such as orthopedics and gastroenterology, Icaza-Gast said in addition to exam rooms and offices, the 6,700-square-foot medical practice will include X-ray and procedure rooms. "And on the dermatology side, we are opening an aesthetics and wellness center, called Aspire, where we will offer facials, chemical peals and other cosmetic services" Icaza-Gast noted.   "We have the potential to bring in three more doctors into the building, including an allergist,” said Icaza-Gast who added she’s hiring a pair of dermatology nurse practitioners, LPNs, medical assistants and other staff.

Scuba Dive Shop to Open in Cape

Nick Laiben -- along with business and dive partners Earnie Wilson and Mitch Penn of Poplar Bluff, Missouri -- plans to open Cape Dive & Travel next month in Cape Girardeau according to Tom Kelsey, commercial broker with Lorimont Commercial Real Estate of Cape Girardeau who handled the lease transaction. The new business location will be at 623 South Silver Springs Road, Suite 310, in the Shawnee Center.

Nine years ago, Nick Laiben went on a family vacation to Cancun, Mexico, and while he was there he took advantage of a "discover scuba resort course" at his hotel. The course gave him a chance to "sample" the undersea world of scuba diving. He was hooked. The Cape Girardeau insurance broker eventually earned his PADI (Professional Association of Diving Instructors) open-water and dive-master certifications and now he, along with two other scuba diving enthusiasts, plan to open a scuba diving store and training center in Cape Girardeau later this spring.

“It’s going to be a PADI Five Star dive shop,” he said and explained the “five star” designation means it will offer a range of products, services and diver training. “It also means we have to have a scuba-quality compressor before we open. Ours is being custom built to our specifications, and we’re waiting on that right now.” The compressor will make it possible for Cape Dive & Travel to refill diver air tanks, a service Laiben said is not available in the immediate area.

Laiben said Cape Dive & Travel will be a “sister” facility to Ozark Dive Shop in Poplar Bluff, which is owned by Penn and Wilson. While he is not certain how many scuba divers live in the Cape Girardeau area, he is confident a scuba operation here can be successful. “We have received numerous messages from people through our Facebook page who are divers that we weren’t even aware of,” he said. According to Laiben, Cape Dive & Travel will focus on “recreational” divers and people who want to scuba dive while on vacation.   The shop in Poplar Bluff caters to technical divers and those with advanced diving certifications,” he said. “This one will definitely be more recreationally oriented.”

Cape Dive &Travel will be a Scubapro Platinum dealer “and we will also carry a few other lines that cater to technical diving” Laiben said, adding the business will also offer a service and maintenance area for scuba equipment as well as a multimedia instructional area for scuba certification training.

Blue Sky Community Services to Open Jackson Facility

Blue Sky Community Services helps adults with developmental disabilities build and support life skills, and this summer, will bring services to Jackson.  The former Jackson Church of the Nazarene at 2245 Old Toll Road in Jackson will house the newest Blue Sky facility.

Owners Kevin and Cheryl Smith said the Jackson location is necessary, as the two Cape Girardeau facilities are full, and about 20 of the organization's consumers live in and near Jackson.  "That frees up 20 more openings here," Cheryl Smith said. "It'll really help."

Blue Sky brings in consumers from all around the county, Kevin Smith said, and that can mean up to an hour riding in a vehicle. "That will make it simpler," he said. And, he said, "Jackson is really embracing us."

At the Feb. 20 Board of Aldermen meeting, a public hearing on a proposed special use permit for the building on Old Toll Road brought no opposition, but plenty of support from family members of some of Blue Sky's consumers.  At the Board of Aldermen hearing, Kevin Smith thanked supporters, and gave more details on services offered.

The special use permit application was approved unanimously. The facility required a special use permit because 2245 Old Toll Road is zoned R-2 single-family residential, and a service and training facility for individuals with disabilities isn't an automatically approved use for a building in that zone, according to city documents.

Storey Management Group general manager Kristy Hamlin said the company purchased the building on Old Toll Road, and expects to meet with state officials soon. "Hopefully plans will be finalized within the next couple of weeks, and we'll get started on renovations and have them moved in this summer," Hamlin said.

Cheryl Smith said the planned renovations include adding some meeting rooms and bathrooms to the former church.

Hamlin said Storey Management Group members met the Smiths a couple of years ago, when they were looking to expand services into Sikeston, Missouri. Then, a year ago, Storey worked with Blue Sky on the expansion into the second Cape Girardeau location, Hamlin said.

"They're really good tenants. We really believe in what they do, and like what they do. They're providing an amazing service," Hamlin said. Stacey Storey, real estate agent with Century 21 Ashland Realty, represented her family's business in the purchase.

Chris Cole, broker-owner of Lorimont Commercial Real Estate, handled the sale on behalf of the seller, The Missouri District Church of the Nazarene.

The property located near Home Depot had been offered on the market either for sale or lease since the fall of 2018.

Guokai, LLC has purchased the recently closed Ryan's restaurant located at 929 S. Westwood in the southern part of Poplar Bluff.  The 10,404 square foot building located on 1.86 acres was listed on the Lorimont website for $1.3 million; however, no exact sales price was disclosed

Members of the buying group are also involved in other Asian themed restaurants including China Wok in Cape Girardeau and Marion, Illinois, China Crown in Cape Girardeau and Chin Restaurant (formerly Ponderosa) in Perryville, Missouri.  Kelsey understood the Poplar Bluff restaurant would have a typical "all you can eat" fresh Chinese buffet along with Sushi bar and Hibachi grill.

The new owners plan a complete remodel of the building along with new equipment and fixtures.  An opening date was not announced but anticipated within the next 4-6 months.  Kelsey also handled the sale of the Cape Ryan's (now Golden Corral), China Crown (formerly Pagoda Gardens) and Perryville Ponderosa (now Chin) properties.
