The Supervalu warehouse property in Scott City is
under contract to be acquired by Buchheit’s, according to commercial
broker Tom Kelsey with Lorimont Place, Ltd. who is handling the sale.
Kelsey said the 260,000 square foot former grocery distribution
center on 52 acres is one of the largest warehouse buildings in the
region. It is located at
600 Daugherty Street, just east of the Scott City I-55 Interchange.
It has been vacant for several years.
Kelsey said it was his understanding the newly acquired property could
be used as the headquarters for the company’s trucking division, a
fleet of over 80 trucks and 100 trailers that cover 48 states.
Some of the warehouse area would also be used for custom storage
and contract leasing.

The Buchheit family business had humble beginnings
back in 1934 in Perry County. Rudy Buchheit started a small general
store that gradually expanded throughout the years.
The company, now run by Rudy’s sons employs over 400 people
with 65,000 items in stock at 5 different locations.
They operate farm and home centers in Jackson, Perryville and
Herculaneum in Missouri and Illinois stores in Sparta and Jacksonville.
Tim Buchheit currently serves as President.

The Scott City facility was originally built in 1961 and expanded in
1974 by Wetterau Foods. Supervalu,
one of the largest grocery retailers in the United States acquired
Wetterau in 1992. The distribution operation at one time employed 300
people but was closed in a warehouse consolidation program in May, 2000.
No sales price was disclosed,
but Kelsey said the property was listed at $3,750,000.
In addition to the warehouse space, the facility also contained
over 10,000 square feet of offices and a complete truck repair shop.
An early April closing date is set for the real estate
transaction.
