Historic downtown Cape Girardeau will have a new antique
mall opening in the very near future. One of the largest available
buildings on Main Street has been sold to Maever's Investment
Corporation. Plans are to use the two level 15,000 square foot building to
house a new antique mall.
Tom Kelsey, commercial real estate broker for Lorimont
Place, Ltd. handled the recent sale. Previous owner of the property was
Downtown Investment Corporation headed by David Knight. Kelsey said the
building built in the late 1950's had been used as a Sterling's variety
store, later a gymnastic operation and most recently as a furniture
store.
The Maever's family, who are also involved in several
regional Save-a- Lot Stores have
immediate plans to convert the building into one of Cape's largest
antique malls. The location is ideal with it's closeness to other
downtown antique shops and arriving riverboats who frequently make a
port stop here.
The entire downtown area is being transformed into an
entertainment, retail, antique and restaurant district. Recently
opened Ragsdale's on the River, just down the corner is the only
micro-brewery operation between St. Louis and Memphis. Kelsey said
demand for downtown property suitable for these uses are increasing.
