CHARTER
COMMUNICATIONS
TO BUILD IN CAPE...

May 1, 2000
Charter Communications has recently announced it will spend in
excess of $3.5 billion to construct more than 500 buildings nationally that will serve as
electronic nerve centers for Charters digital network. It appears as if Cape
Girardeau will benefit from that expansion with the Charters purchase of a 3.25 acre
land parcel in the Six Thirty Industrial Park in Cape
Girardeau.
Tom Kelsey, broker for Lorimont Place, Ltd. announced the
communication firm has bought property west of the Dana Plant on Corporate Circle and is
about to begin work on a new facility there. Kelsey said it was his understanding the new
operation, called in the industry as the "head end" would be used to receive
digital communications and then re-distribute them throughout the entire Southeast
Missouri region that the company services. Charter purchased the former Falcon Cable
network some time ago and has begun to upgrade the entire cable system to the newest
digital technology that will eventually also include internet and phone service. Kelsey
said his real estate firm has also leased office and warehouse space to some of
Charters contractors who are involved in the yearlong upgrade projects in the area.
Charters location in the industrial park will be the 18th company to
locate there.
Two weeks ago, Lorimont announced the sale of 12 acres on the east side
of Dana to the City of Cape Girardeau for a new maintenance facility to be constructed in
the future. Jim Wilson Company, a locally based
automotive distributor is also building in the industrial area and is well along with
their new warehouse and offices, which will be situated on a 5 acre site along Southern
Expressway.
